How to brew Yuban coffee

One measure from the can, four ways to use it: the drip machine, the French press, the pour-over cone and the Keurig.

The measure

How much coffee, how much water

Every Yuban favorite starts from the same measure. The brewing chart on the Traditional Roast can is the starting point for every method: 1 tablespoon of ground coffee for each serving, and one serving is 6 fl oz of water (3/4 cup). For a full pot the can gives a round number: 1/2 cup of coffee, which is 8 tablespoons, makes 10 servings.

10 servings10 Tbsp (1/2 cup + 2 Tbsp)60 fl oz7½ cups

Use fresh, cold water in the machine, as the can recommends. A level tablespoon is the measure. A heaping one makes a stronger cup, and some Dark Roast fans go well past the chart.

Drip coffee maker

A drip pot of ground coffee: the Yuban cans name this method first.
  1. 1Filter and coffee

Set a paper filter in the basket and add 1 tablespoon of Yuban for every serving you plan to brew.

  2. 2Cold water

Pour in 6 fl oz of fresh, cold water per serving.

  3. 3Brew

Follow the machine's own instructions, then pour while the coffee is fresh.

French press

In a French press

The Dark Roast directions cover the press step by step, and the same steps suit Traditional Roast:

  1. 1Coffee in

Spoon in 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per 6 fl oz of water.

  2. 2Water just off the boil

Pour in hot water that has just stopped boiling.

  3. 3Steep 4 minutes

Let it stand for 4 minutes, then press the plunger down slowly and pour.

Yuban comes pre-ground for drip machines, so a little fine coffee can slip past the press screen. Pour gently and leave the last half inch in the pot.

Pour-over

In a pour-over cone

The cans list pour-over brewers too. Wet the paper filter, add 1 tablespoon of coffee per 6 fl oz cup, and pour the hot water in slow circles so the grounds stay covered. When the water has dripped through, the cup is ready.

A pour-over makes one or two cups at a time, which suits a single drinker better than a 10-serving pot.

Keurig brewer

With a Keurig and K-Cup pods

The Yuban K-Cup pods hold Traditional Roast and are made for all Keurig K-Cup brewers. One pod makes one serving: set the pod in the holder, close the lid, choose a cup size and brew. A smaller cup size gives a stronger cup.

Storing

Keeping the can fresh

Close the lid after every scoop. The Dark Roast can calls itself a resealable container to lock in freshness and asks to be stored in a cool, dry place. The K-Cup box says to store it in a dry place.

A big can lasts a while in a one-person home, so the smaller can can be the better pick there even when the larger one costs less per ounce.

Quick answers

Brewing questions

How many scoops of Yuban per cup?

One level tablespoon of ground Yuban for each 6 fl oz serving of water. For a 10-serving pot the can says 1/2 cup, which is 8 tablespoons.

Does Yuban work in a French press?

Yes. Add water just off the boil to the grounds, steep for 4 minutes, then press, as the Dark Roast directions say.
